  • FFXIV Players' Poll The First ~ Results & Analysis {1/21/11}

    The results are in from the poll, with an extensive explanation from Yoshi-P and upcoming changes. I won't link it all here cause its massive, but you can read about it here on the Lodestone!

    Greetings adventurers! I hope you are all enjoying your time in Eorzea.

    Well, after a brief spell of users on Japan's most frequented forum referring to me as "The Duck," I'm happy to say things have settled down and it seems that "Yoshi-P" is the current nickname of choice.
    I apologize for the amount of time I've let pass since my last post. Today I'd like to take the time to thank all of you for the overwhelming number of responses we received to our recent FINAL FANTASY XIV Players' Poll the First!
    This post marks the beginning of my new Letters from the Producer series, which I will continue to post regularly on the Lodestone up until the launch of our official FINAL FANTASY XIV forums. Together with this first letter, I have also decided to make public the results of the first player poll, as well as include information concerning future plans for the game. The post is a bit lengthy, but I hope you all take the time to read it.
    There are a few planned updates that really stand out to me, and I'm very excited:

    • "Introduction of gear with rank requirements to create player-oriented goals" {now does this mean all current gear, or just new stuff yet to be added? I sure hope all gear...}
    • "Possible introduction of traditional names such as paladin, monk, white mage, etc." {oh thank goodness...the traditional names are the best}
    • "Improvements to skill point acquisition for parties"
    • "Revisions to enmity algorithms"
    • "Revision of crowd control actions for each class to improve party-based play"
    • "Release of beast tribe monsters as both roaming and quest-related enemies"
    • "Quests revolving around the danger facing Eorzea"

    Most unexpected to see on the list:
    • "Character jump feature" {I'm not so sure about this one, as I really don't see a use for it, especially with the way the world is designed, I mean even in MMOs that have jumping I hardly use it cause there is really very little designed for it...ah well! I suppose as long as they don't allow us to jump off cliffs or over walls to access lower levels of say Limsa Lominsa quickly. Maybe add something to combat to make jumping useful in avoiding ground based attacks.}

        Incredibly useful for that spot on the ground that looks like a teeny step but you actually have to go around because it's just steep enough for you to not be able to walk up. In b4 the bunny hopping haters. (Besides, infinitely more annoying is the people who afk on their huge flying mounts flapping their enormous wings in your field of vision!)

        Can't read lodestone at work, so if anyone would like to tl;dr it or at least post a few of the resuilts, I'd appreciate it. If not the whole thing.

          If you want to sort through this, you can, but there's a super long table there with a list of planned changes.

          You've been warned!

            Added the entire update to a spoiler in the OP, including the chart of updates. The Q&A section with percentages based on region may be difficult to sort through, but you'll be able to understand it without the images!

                Hmm a lot to read. Not sure if I missed the word ninja in the report, mew. Maybe samurai? Well it might take some time to add more classes but ya, things will improve and I'm glad they will add more quests related to the Empire that will have greater presence in Eorzea.

                  Okay since I am at work I had to mostly skim through that, but it looks promising. They really do seem to be serious about making this game a success. I still don't plan on playing it right away, but they're making a point to win back some of their disillusioned customers, and I gotta say, as one of the biggest critics of SE (at least on this forum), it is working. If they can fix this stuff without completely fucking it up, this game could be very awesome.

                  Of course, if they could have done that from the start, they'd be making a fortune right now.

                      Re: FFXIV Players' Poll The First ~ Results & Analysis {1/21/11}

                      Unless they intend to greatly alter how classes work and what abilities they learn, then there really is no reason to go with the traditional names for the current classes. Personally I would prefer they stick with the unique names as they allow a bit more flexibility in what the classes can actually be.

                      That and the idea of a "Jump" feature are the only two new changes which I really see no need for. There's nothing in this game that would be improved by adding a Jump feature, as even those small impassable bumps are few and far between.

                      Everything else sounds great however, and the simple act of adding more stand-alone, non-leve, story quests that expand the lore of the world while giving people more active content will single handedly make this game that much more fun.

                        Because of how the world has been designed, in a game like XIV (or XI for that matter) it is not a matter of jumping, but of moving much faster.

                        So movement speed increase options (good reliable ones, not expensive drops or slightly useful consumables) might work much better. And by that I mean options to have 50%-100% movement speed increase outside of combat without requiring special gear or items. Or adding Chocobos (but this owuld only work outside) for an even greater speed.

                        Once you move fast enough (outside of combat) bumps on the road wont matter much.

                        Or at least that's how I see it.

                          they would make more sales if the Jump animation will be like the Contra jump, mew:

                              I'm encouraged by the dev team's acceptance of the poll's results and their subsequent feedback as opposed to the usual S-E stance of, "We're disappointed the players aren't playing the game like we want them to play it..."
